11/20 Addenda: Avatar

Avatar Comics specialize in both adult-themed and sexually explicit comic books. As such, the visual element is a strong factor in grabbing the reader's attention. As the small selection (I chose not to include the explicit variant covers) for this week attests, Avatar's cover artist like to stress the most erotic stances a heroine can (willingly or unwillingly) fall into during combat. That being so, their covers stand among the more titillating ones, with whips, tentacles or ropes usually substituting for phalluses in unavidably sexual situations. That's the case with most variant covers for UNHOLY: ARGENT VS ONYX #3.

Then comes WARRIOR NUN: DORA #2. Even for non-Catholic societies, the nuns stand as a symbol of (perhaps archaic) sexual purity (one dare's not go as far as saying 'innocence') and personal peace and reclusion. The convolution of nuns with warriors add a frisson of danger, action and, therefore, eroticism to the nun's habit, an element deftly stressed in the following covers. Enjoy.

Cover for: Unholy by Matt Martin; Christian Zanier; Renato Camilo; and Nahuel López; Warrior Nun by Christian Zanier; Matt Martin; and Renato Camilo.
